Menstrual health
Changes in pain, bleeding or cycle timing deserve individual assessment—especially when they affect daily life or are different from your usual pattern.
Arrange an assessment if pain is severe, is becoming worse, disrupts work or daily activities, continues beyond your usual period, or occurs with heavier or irregular bleeding. Period pain can have several causes, so treatment depends on an accurate evaluation.
Seek medical advice when bleeding lasts longer than seven days, you soak through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours, pass unusually large clots, or feel unusually tired or breathless. If heavy bleeding occurs with dizziness, fainting or a racing pulse, seek urgent medical care.
Possible reasons include pregnancy, stress, weight or exercise changes, PCOS, thyroid conditions, perimenopause and other hormonal or medical factors. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test. Persistent changes should be assessed by a clinician.
Some prescription hormonal options may be suitable for delaying bleeding, but the correct option and timing depend on your health, current medicines and contraception needs. Do not start or borrow hormonal medication without advice from a qualified clinician.
If possible, record the start dates and duration of recent periods, bleeding flow, clots, pain, missed cycles and related symptoms. Bring a list of medicines and note whether pregnancy is possible. This information helps guide appropriate examination and testing.
This information is general and does not replace an individual medical assessment.
